In February 2025, Prof Wilfried Zörner and Mr Thorsten Summ visited the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU) to conduct a vital on-site assessment within the framework of the FACE-NDC project implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This mission was the first step to strengthen renewable energy education and research at both partner universities, specifically within the context of agricultural and forestry value chains.
The primary goal of the on-site assessment was to gain a thorough understanding of the universities' existing capabilities and activities in renewable energy teaching and research. This involved a detailed evaluation of current laboratory facilities, and an analysis of how renewable energy topics are integrated into existing Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. The information gathered during the on-site assessment will directly shape the development of a tailored capacity building program concentrating on two key areas: academic development and laboratory infrastructure.
Academically, the team of THI-InES team conducted an analysis regarding the current pedagogical approaches to renewable energy education. The next step will be to determine how best to support the revision of teaching modules in the field of renewable energy in terms of content and didactics.
Regarding laboratory infrastructure, the on-site assessment provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate the existing facilities at both universities, including the laboratory infrastructure and equipment. Based on these findings, the project team will recommend specific improvements to laboratory infrastructure and equipment, resulting in a list of proposed procurements. This will ensure that students have access to practical, hands-on training opportunities. In addition, this will facilitate the conduct of high-quality assessments by researchers and the delivery of services to industry clients.
More information on the activities and outputs of the project can be found in the project profile.
