Rights of data subjects
If you have been detected by the sensors of one of our test vehicles, you have the following rights with regard to your personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation:
- If your personal data is processed, you have the right to obtain information about the personal data stored about you (Art. 15 GDPR).
- If incorrect personal data is processed, you have the right to have this data rectified (Art. 16 GDPR).
- If the legal requirements are met, you can request the erasure or restriction of processing (Art. 17 and 18 GDPR).
- If you have consented to the data processing or a contract for data processing exists and the data processing is carried out using automated procedures, you may have a right to data portability (Art. 20 GDPR).
- If you make use of your above-mentioned rights, the public authority will check whether the legal requirements for this are met.
- You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The supervisory authority responsible for us is the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection, Wagmüllerstraße 18, 80538 Munich.

Purposes of data processing
The purpose of data processing is the recording of data sets for scientific research and testing of data-based procedures for traffic safety and traffic flow optimization. - The data is used in various scientific projects in the subject area in order to keep the total volume of recordings to a minimum.
A list of the projects involved with further information can be found below.
Legal basis for data processing
The legal basis for data processing is Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit e SGVO iVm Art. 3 Abs. 2 S.2 BayHIG und Art. 4 Abs. 1 BayDSG sowie Art. 9 Abs. 1 lit g DSGVO iVm Art. 8 Abs. 1 Satz 1 Ziff 5 und Art. 6 As. 3 lit c BayDSG
Categories of personal data not yet known to the data subject
Affected persons are all road users in the camera areas, such as pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, car drivers and license plate holders.
Sources of personal data that are not or were not collected from the data subject
Recordings with vehicles equipped with RGB cameras.
Recipients or categories of recipients of the personal data
Personal data from the traffic recordings with RGB cameras (red-yellow-blue) are required for THI's research in the field of traffic safety and traffic flow optimization. If we work together with research partners or with service providers, for example for the necessary annotation of the data, corresponding data processing contracts are concluded as required by law, which ensure the same level of data protection for the parties involved as is binding for the THI.
A list of cooperation partners can be found under individual projects.
Duration of storage of personal data
The data is stored to the extent and for as long as it is required for scientific research purposes. To comply with good scientific practice, this is at least 10 years. - All data used for training AI must be processed for as long as the corresponding AI is in use; it always requires all training data. Older data cannot be replaced by newer recordings; newer recordings only ever supplement them.
Reserach Projects
Personal data is currently being collected in the following research projects:
- Automated driving lighthouse::
- Project lead: Prof. Dr. Torsten Schön
- Description: The project focuses on improving traffic safety, automated driving, and real-time AI-driven cooperative perception through multi-modal sensor fusion. This includes integrating data from stationary sensors at intersections and mobile sensors on vehicles.
- SiRaMiS: Safety of cyclists in mixed traffic with intelligent road users and intelligent road infrastructure (Project leads: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Huber, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Botsch, Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schmidtner)
- Hymne2 (Hybrid models and AI methods for safe mobility – Data use for safeguarding automated driving functions) (Project lead: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Botsch)
