THI continues lecture series on the topic "Energy - Environment - Sustainability"

The Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) is continuing the successful lecture series "Energy - Environment - Sustainability" in the winter semester 2021/2022. The spectrum of topics, to which experts from scientific and economic practice are invited, ranges from renewable energies in Brazil to the role of the Irschingen gas-fired power plants and the IN2H2 hydrogen initiative in the region.

The target groups are students, pupils, environmental groups, politicians and other interested persons. The 45-minute lectures will take place on Wednesdays at 6.30 pm online via Zoom and on site at the THI. On Wednesday, 10 November, Prof. Dr. Daniel Navarro Gevers (THI Professor of Electrical Power Engineering in Renewable Energies) and Prof. Dr. Alexandre Rasi Aoki (Professor of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Curitiba, Brazil) will talk about energy supply with renewable energies in Brazil, a huge country with very different energy supply needs, using project presentations and examples. There is a long-standing cooperation with the TH Ingolstadt.

On Wednesday, 17 November, Oliver Schwadtke, head of the Irsching power plant, will talk about "The gas-fired power plants in Irsching - contribution to a stable power supply in times of nuclear and coal phase-out and transition to renewable energies". The lecture will cover the history of the modern gas-fired power plants Irsching 4 and 5 with their return to the energy market in October 2020 as well as the importance of the new reserve power plant for fast balancing energy, Irsching 6, which is currently under construction.

On Wednesday, 24 November, Dr. Adil El Mernissi (Gunvor Raffinerie Ingolstadt GmbH, Senior Process Designer), Johannes Vollnhals (Ingolstädter Kommunalbetriebe, Division Manager Waste Management) and Maximilian Mayer (IFG Ingolstadt, Project Manager IN2H2 Project) will speak on the topic "IN2H2 Initiative - Status quo and future prospects for the region". The hydrogen project IN2H2 was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport in the first phase of the HyExperts category of the HyLand competition. Against this background, the City of Ingolstadt, together with IFG Ingolstadt, Ingolstädter Kommunalbetriebe, Stadtbus Ingolstadt, Ingolstädter Stadtwerke, Gunvor Raffinerie and other partners from industry and science, developed a concept to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of introducing hydrogen mobility in the region.
Together with Wenger Engineering from Ulm, a globally recognised specialist in this field, a strategy was developed on how, for example, municipal buses, waste collection vehicles or other vehicles and applications could benefit. It was also evaluated where "green" hydrogen can be produced in Ingolstadt to replace fossil fuels. In this lecture, the project actors will give you an insight into the results of the "IN2H2" project and present the developed concept. In addition, participants can expect an outlook on the coming developments in the region in the field of hydrogen.

Sabine Bschorer, Professor of Fluid Mechanics, Energy Technology and Process and Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Head of the "Energy Systems and Renewable Energies" degree programme (www.thi.de/go/eee).
