Cybersecurity (B. Sc.)

• Applying for a degree course
  Students may only begin their degree in the winter semester. The main language in this course is German, so most modules and exams will be held in German. In order to enter, you will need to prove a very high level of fluency (C1) in the language.

  Applications for this degree may be submitted through the online application system from May 2 to July 15, 2024.
• Admission requirements
  To gain admission to the programme, applicants need one of the following qualifications for university entrance:
  • Abitur (European Baccalaureate, A-Levels, High School Diploma)
  • Fachhochschulreife (Vocational Baccalaureate)
  • Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (Specialised A-Level)

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

Cyber security plays an important role in all digitalisation projects. Graduates can work in diverse domains, including mobility providers, the healthcare system, public security, the financial sector and operators of critical infrastructures (CRITIS).

The degree programme qualifies students for employment in the following areas:

• as a Cyber Defender or Security Engineer, graduates develop and implement protective measures for networks and systems.
• as an Application Security Specialist, graduates programme secure software or support software development with their cybersecurity know-how.
• as a Penetration Tester, graduates test the cybersecurity of applications or networks by acting like hackers and attempting to break into the systems.
• as a Security Operations Centre Analysist, graduates continuously monitor the security of networks.
• as a Digital Forensics Analyst, graduates investigate security incidents and track hackers.

In order to do justice to the international character of the subject area of cyber security, it is planned to offer at least one module per semester in English from the second semester onwards. The main teaching language is German though.

To prepare for your semester abroad or to learn another foreign language alongside your studies, you can take language courses at THI's own Language Center (Sprachenzentrum). The language courses are taught only by native speakers and offered at different levels. All courses are free of charge for our students. THI does not run any student housing – neither on-campus nor off-campus – and therefore cannot provide you with accommodation. Finances - service fee

Cybersecurity is a specialized area within Computer Science that focuses on the planned protection of IT systems, networks and data from digital threats from cyberspace, while conventional Computer Science generally deals with the processing and use of information by computers and software.

In the Cybersecurity study course, the focus is on security-related procedures in Computer Science. There are introductory lectures on IT security in the first semester. In all courses on the study course at THI, we focus on security implications - for example in programming, web technologies, etc.. As a Computer Science student, you will learn about all the important areas of applied Computer Science, but you will acquire specialized knowledge early on that will set you apart from applied Computer Scientists. However, you can specialize in any direction at any time in both study courses.

You do not need any special prior knowledge to study Cybersecurity. However, you should be motivated and have a basic interest in Computer Science and security.

The THI emphasizes practical application. We always teach the necessary theory in relation to later application.

Cybersecurity is present in many aspects of everyday life these days. The most common example can be found in internet use. Every time you use the internet - be it for browsing, sending emails, online banking, online shopping or social media - you interact with Cybersecurity. Web browsers, antivirus programs and firewalls protect your devices and data from threats.

A variety of career opportunities are open to you after graduating in Cybersecurity. For example, you could work as a cybersecurity analyst or consultant to help organizations identify and fix security vulnerabilities. Alternatively, you could move into IT forensics to investigate cyber attacks and gather evidence. Other options include positions such as security architect, penetration tester or security manager. With the increasing importance of Cybersecurity in all industries, there are many exciting paths for your career development.

Yes, all Computer Science Master's programs at THI are suitable. A transfer to other universities and universities of applied sciences is possible with our Bachelor's degree.

The modules are primarily offered in German, with some sessions available in English.
